The 'Toyo-Nishiki' Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles speciosa) is a striking deciduous shrub famous for its unique "tri-color" display, featuring red, white, and pink flowers simultaneously on the same branch.
Key Features
Flowers: Showy, 2-inch blooms appear in early spring (March–April) before the leaves. A single plant often produces a mix of solid red, solid white, and pink flowers, or even multi-colored individual blooms.
Fruit: Followed by yellowish-green, fragrant fruits (quinces) that ripen in autumn. While bitter raw, they are excellent for making jellies, jams, and preserves.
Form: A dense, multi-stemmed shrub with an upright, spreading habit and thorny, gray-brown stems. It typically grows 6 to 10 feet tall and wide.
Foliage: Glossy dark green leaves that emerge with a reddish tint in spring.
