The Citronella Geranium (scientifically Pelargonium graveolens or P. 'Citrosum') is a popular scented geranium loved for its citrusy fragrance and lacy, textured leaves. It is often marketed as the "Mosquito Plant," but there is a common misconception about how well it actually works!
The "Mosquito Plant" Myth
The Scent: It smells exactly like the citronella used in candles, but it is not the plant used to make commercial citronella oil (which comes from Citronella Grass, Cymbopogon nardus).
Effectiveness: Simply sitting near the plant won't keep mosquitoes away. Research has shown that mosquitoes will actually land on the plant itself!
To get any effect: You must crush the leaves to release the oils. Some people rub the crushed leaves on their skin as a mild, short-term repellent, but it is far less effective than true citronella oil or DEET.
