GuideSunlight: This is the most critical factor. Without enough sun, you'll get plenty of green leaves but few "flowers" (bracts). Aim for the hottest, sunniest spot in your garden.
Watering: Established plants are drought-tolerant. Overwatering is the most common mistake—it leads to root rot and drops in color. In pots, water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry.
Soil: They need excellent drainage. Use a sandy or loamy mix. If planting in a pot, a cactus or succulent mix is often a good base.
Roots: Be extremely careful when transplanting. Bougainvillea has a delicate, fibrous root system that does not like to be disturbed. Many experts recommend cutting the sides of the nursery pot and planting the whole thing to minimize shock.
